The following letter is being posted today. If you would like the self-assessment guide, ‘Are you a Feminist or a Post-Feminist?’, could you please email a request to me at email@example.com. Thank you.
Dear Ms Mensch,
As a writer on gender politics, I’ve been following with interest the fuss created by your comments on being a ‘Tory feminist’. For the life of me I can’t see why a right-minded woman would wish to be associated with the word ‘feminist’, which in the public mind is a toxic term irredeemably associated with women such as Harriet Harman (née Harman) and Angela Eagle (née Eaglet). Right-minded people in general (and right-minded women in particular) surely deserve a clear alternative.
In attempting to redefine the word ‘feminist’, right-minded women will deplete their time and energy on a lost cause. Surely the time has come for a new term to be introduced, so you can put some clear blue water between yourselves and the extreme left-wing ideologues. I suggest the term ‘post-feminist’ and enclose a guide for women unsure whether or not to describe themselves as feminists or post-feminists.
