‘Were women historically oppressed? Are women oppressed today in developing countries?’ – Karen Straughan

Another video by the legendary Karen Straughan (GirlWritesWhat), in which she seeks to answer two questions:

Were women historically oppressed?

Are women oppressed today in developing countries?

The link also takes you to an interesting video recording of Zara Faris, a young British Muslim woman, in which she tackles the second question with respect to women in the Muslim world. She makes the important point that very few women in those countries would trade their combination of rights and responsibilities for those of Muslim men. The idea that women are oppressed in such societies only makes sense if you look at one side of the coin, rights. Feminists never admit that men need in such countries need additional rights for one reason, and one reason only – to enable them to meet their additional responsibilities.
